Improvements to the transportation infrastructure in the Chernivtsi–Suceava (Shepit–Izvorarele Sucevei) border region

Today, September 4, 2021, implementation began on the project “Improvement of Transportation Infrastructure in the Chernivtsi–Suceava (Shepit–Izvorarele Sucevei) Border Areas” (project code 1HARD/3. 1/27), which was developed by the Bukovina Center for Reconstruction and Development and is funded under the Joint Operational Program for Cross-Border Cooperation of the European Neighborhood Instrument “Romania–Ukraine 2014–2020.”

Development of the project began back in 2017, and it has become one of the largest infrastructure projects to be implemented under the Program.

The project duration is 24 months (September 4, 2021 – September 3, 2023).

The main beneficiary of the project is the Chernivtsi Regional Council. Other beneficiaries of the project include the Suceava County Council, the Road Administration in Chernivtsi Oblast, and the Bukovina Center for Reconstruction and Development.

The project budget totals 2,195,895.50 euros, of which 1,975,866.77 euros is funded by the European Union, representing 89.98% of the total project cost.

The main objective of the project is to promote regional development and cooperation along the Romanian-Ukrainian border by expanding transit capabilities.

The specific objectives of the project are:

To improve and support cross-border cooperation between Romania and Ukraine in the areas of transit capacity, transportation infrastructure, and tourism by carrying out construction work on the road leading to the “Shepit-Izvoarele Sucevei” border crossing point.

To develop a joint cross-border framework for environmentally friendly transportation by organizing an international conference and formulating a Joint Strategy for Environmentally Sustainable Transportation Development in the cross-border region.
